The treatment of congenital defects and complicated diseases will be key priorities for the National Children’s Medical Center, which is under construction in Shanghai.

Two local leading children’s hospitals are responsible for the center’s two branches — one in Minhang District, the other in the Pudong New Area. They will be completed in 2020.

The Minhang branch, which comes under the auspices of the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University, will treat babies with complicated diseases, infections and immunities, blood oncology, and study child care and rehabilitation, said Dr Huang Guoying, president of the hospital.

The branch that comes under Shanghai Children’s Medical Center will focus on treatment and research of child leukemia, early development and intervention, and research and adoption of pioneering technologies and therapies.

“We will also undertake surveys and research for the government’s health policy making to ensure children all over the nation can enjoy better service and care,” said Xia Lin, an official from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.
