2 killed and 6 injured in supermarket collapse in Shanghai

Two people died and six were injured after the second floor of a supermarket in Pudong New Area caved in this morning, authorities said.

The second floor of the supermarket Jiadele on Wanxia Road in Zhuqiao township collapsed at 7am as too many goods were stored there, the township government said in a statement.

Seven people were found under piles of goods at 9:45am. One of them who was critically injured later died at Pudong People's Hospital despite rescue efforts at 1pm.

Another person was found dead at the site at 2:10pm.

The supermarket is being cleaned up. 

Authorities are examining supermarkets and shopping malls in the district to detect any safety hazards.

The supermarket is a small one and part of its second floor is used as a warehouse to store goods. 

The incident is under further investigation.
