The tragic scene after a supermarket floor collapsed on Saturday, killing three people.

The woman held responsible for a Pudong supermarket floor collapse that killed three people has been placed under police control.

The accident occurred around 7am on Saturday in a Jiadele outlet on 138 Wanxia Road in Zhuqiao Town when the second floor, used for storage, suddenly collapsed, the township government said.

Nearby store keepers claimed the supermarket had illegally added a floor and built an attic and they suspected the floor collapsed because too many goods were stored there.

Rescuers were able to find seven people alive under a pile of goods by Saturday noon. But one of them later died at Pudong People's Hospital despite emergency treatment. 

On Saturday afternoon, two bodies were found at the site. Rescue operations continued until 8pm on Saturday.

The identities of the injured and the dead weren’t revealed.

The woman in charge of the supermarket, surnamed Chen, has been placed under police control, the township government said, without giving other details.

A witness surnamed Li told Xinmin Evening News that the supermarket opened at 6:30am on Saturday and that most of the customers were senior citizens wanting  to buy fresh produce for their families.
