An underground water pipe in Hongkou ruptured where Siping and Liyang roads meet at 2:40pm yesterday. Police closed streets to traffic around the area.

Witnesses said water sprayed up to 4 meters high and Hailun and Qingyang roads, as well as Xingjiaqiao Road N, were partly flooded.

More than 70 residences and shops nearby were also reported to have been inundated by the rupture. Water company officials turned off the hydro valve supplying water from Siping Road to Sichuan Road N.

“The pipe is estimated to be repaired within 24 hours. All traffic will be back to normal before the morning rush hour on Monday,” said an emergency repairs official.
