Three people on a moped knocked down and injured a traffic police officer on a motorcycle when being stopped for a check on Wednesday evening in Putuo District, police said on Saturday.

Two of the three have been detained with the third still being hunted at the moment, police said.

The incident took place in the Zhenbei Road tunnel at about 5:25pm.

Police found the trio riding a moped which is obviously larger and faster than those allowed to hit the road.

It was also illegal for a rider of a moped to take adult passengers, according to the traffic law.

Zhu Huiguang, a traffic police officer, signaled them to stop for a check, but the person who drove the moped sped up and fled, police said.

Zhu got on his motorcycle to chase them, and right before they were about to exit the tunnel, he was knocked down by the moped which fled on after that.

Zhu had fractures in two ribs and bruises and tears on his face and lips from the incident, police said.

Police managed to identify them and caught two of them the next day.

The two men, surnamed Wu and Wang, alleged have confessed. They now face the charge of interference of public duties which could get them up to three years in prison.
