The humble tax receipt is offering a win-win opportunity.

Consumers who ask for value-added tax receipts at businesses in Shanghai have a chance to win 400,000 yuan (US$61,538) from next month as local tax authorities start trialing a double round draw mode via WeChat and Alipay.

This is the latest incentive to regulate the issue and use of such receipts.

The first round of the draw allows payers to win 5, 10  and 100 yuan prizes — and they can be claimed immediately on WeChat and Alipay.

The use of new platforms allows winners to claim the prize with a simple click on their phones, officials said.

The second round of draw is run every quarter, and the prizes are 50,000 yuan and 400,000 yuan. Those who have participated in the first round and have completed real name registration are eligible.

Winners will be told to collect their prize at spots designated by the Shanghai Office of the State Administration of Taxation within 60 days after the results are announced.

The trial covers four service sectors including catering, accommodation, entertainment and decoration, with nearly 60,000 businesses in Shanghai involved.

The public is encouraged to alert authorities of any irregularities such as illegal sales of receipts.
