Help for students from poor families in Guizhou Province
Shanghai New Epoch Education Group donated 3.93 million yuan (US$595,480) to a special foundation at the weekend to sponsor students from poor families in Guizhou Province's Nayong County.
The foundation was set up on August 18 last year by the company, the Shanghai branch of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang and the Shanghai Charity Foundation, to help students in the county to finish their high school studies and to aid charity activities such as disaster relief, alleviate poverty and voluntary teaching.
The company donated 3.16 million yuan on that day and a further 1 million yuan four months later. The latest donation will be used to sponsor 150 students.
The company has sponsored 395 students in the county in the past 11 years. These include 269 who have graduated from high schools and 98 percent have been admitted into top universities in China, including Tsinghua and Peking universities.
