A man who procured foreign women for prostitution in Shanghai has been handed a nine-month jail term and fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,510) for solicitation and housing prostitutes, the Jing'an District People's Court said yesterday.

Surnamed Wang, the jobless Shanghainese convict in his 50s had seven prior convictions.

Wang said he met a woman from Southeast Asia at a local pub in late April, and she told him that some women from her country had been visiting China to prostitute themselves. He told her he had many friends who were working as pimps, and solicited more than 10 girls.

Between April and July, Wang rented a flat on Datong Road, Jing'an District, to house the prostitutes and marketed them on WeChat.

Wang told the women, who were in their 20s, to attract customers by pretending to be South Korean. He took part of their illicit earnings.

The prostitutes had been visiting China on one-month travel visas.
