New elevated road to relieve traffic in Qingpu
A new elevated road opened to public in the western suburbs on Wednesday to relieve congestion on the Huqingping Expressway, a major connection to downtown.
The 1.5-kilometer elevated road in Zhaoxiang Town of Qingpu District allows the Huqingping Expressway to run over the Jiading-Songjiang Highway, another busy traffic route in the city's western outskirts, according to the Shanghai Municipal Investment Group which is in charge of the project.
The newly-open project is near the Zhaoxiang Commercial Center featuring an outlet shopping center and several popular malls. A large number of residents from downtown drive to the area, especially during weekends and holidays, leading to severe congestion, according to the group.
The new road has a total of 12 lanes along with pedestrian and cycle paths. It is also more convenient for residents in Qingpu to travel downtown.
Previously, the Huqingping and Jiading-Songjiang highways intersected with each other on the ground, worsening conditions of both busy thoroughfares.
