Authorities in suburban Jinshan District launched an inspection on Christmas Eve targeting fire hazards in entertainment venues and religious sites.

“Entertainment venues must build awareness around fire control,” said Gao Pengcheng, deputy director of the district’s fire supervision department. “Especially on such occasions like Christmas Eve when people are gathered together.”

In a bar named Gaiya on Longxiang Road, officers found the fire extinguisher was seriously corroded. Clutter was piled up on the second floor and the power of an emergency exit light in the bar was cut off. Such carelessness could have led to fatalities if a fire broke out, the authority warned.

The bar was ordered to shut down until the fire hazard is rectified.

The authority found 35 omissions in 26 different venues, mostly entertainment sites. A Haoledi KTV was ordered to shut down as well because its fire hydrant and fire extinguisher were out of date.

Gao said the suburb's fire department will continue inspections to ensure the safety of public places. “To those who drop their guard on fire control, there will be more strict punishments coming."
