Summer opening for riverside walkway
A walking trail along the Huancheng River around the Jiading Old Town will open to the public as early as next June.
More than 120,000 square meters along the 6.5-kilometer river is expected to be renovated.
Huancheng is the only ancient river that is well preserved and still functioning in Shanghai. Encircled by the river, the old town is packed with old streets, residential areas, parks, schools as well as busy trunk roads.
The renovation of the walking trail started last year after careful planning. Along the river bank, paths, greenways, lights and other facilities will be set up for people to enjoy.
Beside the river bank, visitors can also visit historical sites of Zhouqiao, Xidajie and North Water Gate.
The trail will be made up of three sections with the theme of leisure, ecological and historical.
The leisure section is from Qinghe Road to East Lianqi River and is mainly residential areas, so the renovation aims to upgrade the public activity and recreational space along the river. Two platforms in Children’s Park beside the river will be connected to make it convenient for visitors to enjoy water fun.
Renovation of the ecological section from East Lianqi River to Bole Road will mainly focus on the upgrading of greenbelts as there are a lot of public spaces in the section.
The historical section from Bole Road to Qinghe Road is mainly made up of old water gates and City Wall Heritage Park.
