A man has been detained for five days for illegally storing a large amount of lighters and lighter gas in his home, Shanghai police said on Friday.

In a fire safety inspection of a residential complex on Shangzhong Road, Xuhui District, on December 19, police found irregularities in the man’s first-floor yard, which looked like a warehouse.

In the apartment, rented by a man surnamed Dong, police discovered more than 30,000 lighters and over 200 bottles of lighter gas.

Police said there were no fire safety facilities or emergency exits at the apartment, a requirement in locations where large amounts of inflammable objects are stored.

Dong told police that he is in the wholesale business after piles of sealed toilet paper and poker cards were also found in his apartment.
