A bus passenger who was severely injured when the driver slammed on the brakes has been awarded more than 433,232 yuan (US$66,406) in compensation, according to Minhang District People’s Court.

The driver, Zhang Cheng, braked suddenly when he was driving near the Shuicheng and Xianxia roads at 8:30am on October 10 in 2016.

One of the hand grips came loose and the passenger who was holding on to it was thrown to the front of the bus and fell on the floor, the court said.

According to traffic police, Zhang was fully responsible for the accident. The passenger, surnamed Lu, was seriously injured and had to have surgery on a lung and his spleen.

Lu had talked to the bus company about compensation but when they couldn't reach an agreement, he took the matter to court.
