A man who set his new motorcycle on fire after he was stopped by traffic police has been arrested for arson, according to prosecutors in Songjiang District.

At 8pm on December 18 last year, a suspect surnamed Jiang was riding the motorcycle he had newly bought in the wrong direction.

When police stopped him they found he didn't have a license. Told he would be fined and his motorcycle seized, he became extremely angry, prosecutors said.

He opened the fuel pipe and used his lighter to set it on fire. Police rushed to a nearby security guard's office to get a fire extinguisher and put out the blaze. Jiang was subdued at the scene, prosecutors said.
