Visitors seem almost part of the artwork at the Xiaojiaochang nianhua (Chinese New Year painting) exhibition at Huabao Tower in downtown Yuyuan Garden yesterday. The art is named after its place of origin — Xiaojiaochang in the city’s Laochengxiang, or Old Town, near Yuyuan Garden. The folk art is a combination of woodblock carving and hand painting. The exhibition, which runs to March 5, features 44 replicas of century-old nianhua, with display areas themed on Chinese Lunar New Year traditions, celebrations, customs, women’s lives and opera stories.
