Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong met Jose Augusto Duarte, the newly-appointed Portugal’s ambassador to China, and his delegation on Monday.

Ying said Shanghai and Portugal have always had good relationship. Portugal’s food, architecture, and football teams are well-received in the city. Since Shanghai and Porto became sister cities, the two have expanded their cooperation into more areas.

Ying told his guests that Shanghai will build itself into an international center of economy, finance, trade, shipping and bring into the framework of the globally influential science and innovation center by 2020.

Also, Shanghai will further improve its education, hygiene, pension and retirement system, and start working on the refined management of mega-city mechanism. Shanghai is willing to work with Portugal and Ying hoped that the two can learn from each other’s experiences in modernization development.

Duarte said Shanghai’s social and economic development is very impressive, and there are so many things Portugal can learn from Shanghai. He expressed his hope for strengthening the cooperation in economy and technology.

Joao Fins Do Lago, Portugal’s consul general in Shanghai, also attended the meeting.
