Spring Festival is the time when wanderers head home and families get together. While the majority rejoice in the feast, a few sacrifice their time with family to keep Shanghai running smoothly.

These people work in essential services like sanitation, security and public transport. Shanghai Daily followed just a few of them on the night of Chinese New Year’s Eve to see their lives.

By sharing their hard work and devotion, we hope to shine a little light on the city’s hard workers — those unsung heroes — at the dawn of the Year of the Dog.
