Man detained for 'insulting' Nanjing massacre comments

A man has been apprehended and will be detained for five days for allegedly making “insulting” comments online about the Nanjing massacre in which over 300,000 Chinese were killed, Shanghai police said on Friday.

The 35-year-old man, surnamed Meng, allegedly posted in a WeChat group on Thursday that more people should have been killed in the massacre, and dared police to punish him.

Meng was arguing with some group members and made such claims to express his anger, according to police. 

He was reported to authorities by some other members of the group, which has over 400 members, and was apprehended soon after. 

He now faces five days of detention for "picking quarrels and making trouble."

In a statement, police said Meng's behavior "caused bad social influence by deliberately insulting and cursing victims of the massacre and hurting the feelings of the fellow citizens.”

Meng has allegedly owned up and expressed regret about what he posted.
