Line 5 track extension completed, testing to begin this year
Track construction of the south extension of Metro Line 5 has been completed, while the installation of overhead electricity systems will be completed by the end of the month, allowing for trial operations to begin this year.
During track construction, floating slabs were installed beneath the tracks to reduce vibrations when trains are running at high speed. As the first elevated Metro line that runs across the Huangpu River, the tracks on the bridge crossing the river are designed to adapt to possible bridge deformations so that passengers will have a safer and more comfortable trip.
Meanwhile, the existing Line 5 trains and stations are also undergoing an upgrade to allow six-carriage trains to replace the current four-carriage ones. The current trains have been criticized for being incapable of managing large passenger flows during rush hours.
Wu Chenyu, who works near Xinzhuang, said every morning is a challenge as she tries to squash herself into the train at Yindu Road in Minhang District. "Though it's only two stops before I get off at the terminal, it is still frustrating," she said.
Shanghai Shentong Metro Group started expanding the station platforms and updating signal systems along the line in March 2016. Construction is almost complete and six-carriage trains will soon begin the testing phase.
Feng Hao, from Shentong Group, said the total passenger flow set a new record on March 16 when 12.3 million people took trains in the city. Lines 1, 2, 8, 9 and 10 each witnessed more than a million passengers on the day.
The south extension of Line 5 will start from Dongchuan Road Station in Minhang District and end at Fengxian Xincheng Station in Fengxian District, covering a length of 19.5 kilometres and nine stops. It will be the first Metro line to run in suburban Fengxian District.
