The Shanghai International Film Festival organizing committee announced today that famous Chinese filmmaker and actor Jiang Wen will chair the jury panel for the festival’s Golden Goblet Awards.

It has been four years since a Chinese film celebrity was jury president of the awards; the last time was in 2014 when actress Gong Li held the position.

Jiang, who graduated from the Central Academy of Drama in 1984, rose to fame in director Xie Jin’s classic film “Hibiscus Town.” Later, his outstanding acting in Zhang Yimou’s award-winning “Red Sorghum” made him a household name across China.

In 1993, Jiang made his directorial film debut with “In the Heat of the Sun,” which is based on Wang Shuo’s novel. The film received several awards, including best film, best director and best leading actor at the 33rd Golden Horse Award.

Xia Yu, who played the leading role in the film, also won the best actor award at the 51st Venice International Film Festival.

Jiang’s directorial credits also include the art film “The Sun Also Rises” and the hilarious box office sensation “Let the Bullets Fly.”

His new action-packed comedy “Hidden Man,” which is adapted from a martial arts novel, will be released later this year.

According to the organizing committee, Jiang has a long-time affinity for the Shanghai International Film Festival.

In 2014, he was honored at SIFF with an award for his outstanding contribution to Chinese cinema. His representative movies were also exhibited at the festival.

The 21st Shanghai International Film Festival will be held from June 16 to 25.
