Seven drunk suspects held for beating policeman

A policeman was insulted, kicked and beaten in Yangpu District on Monday after being called to an altercation at a restaurant.

Seven drunk suspects have been detained for beating up a policeman, Shanghai police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place outside a restaurant on Jungong Road, Yangpu District, at about 4:30pm on Monday.

The suspects were attacking staff members of the restaurant when the policeman was called to the scene. He demanded that the suspects stop but was insulted, kicked and beaten, with his radio and video recorder smashed on the ground, police said.

He suffered bruises on his arms and wrists following the attack.

The suspects, who were subdued by other policemen and taken into custody, have allegedly owned up.

The group are relatives who dined at the restaurant after finishing tomb-sweeping the same day.

They had a scuffle with restaurant staff because they were asked to pay and leave before they were ready, police said.
