Shanghai Party Secretary Li Qiang met Bill Morneau, Canada’s minister of finance, and his delegation on Monday.

Li said China have had frequent leadership exchanges with Canada in recent years, and President Xi Jinping and Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada, have reached important consensus to promote the cooperation between the two countries in various areas. And the cooperation between Shanghai and its Canadian sister city Montreal and Quebec have been deepening.

Shanghai is an open city and it will unfalteringly deepen the opening-up reforms. The city will take the opportunity of the upcoming China International Import Expo to strengthen the cooperation with Canada in trade, technology, and education, Li added.

Morneau said this visit to Shanghai is to promote the consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Canada recognizes the importance of strengthening the cooperation with China. Canada hopes to have regular exchanges and cooperation with Shanghai, and it will take the opportunity of the upcoming CIIE to promote the two countries’ cooperation in trade, tourism, culture, technology, and education.

Zhuge Yujie, secretary-general of the CPC Shanghai Committee, also attended the meeting.
