Three men have been detained for allegedly attacking a traffic police officer after two of them were stopped for an e-bike offense, police said on Wednesday.

The police officer, Tang Junjie, stopped two men on an e-bike near the crossroads of Diantai Road and Shapu Road in Gucun Town, Baoshan District, about 1:35pm on April 3.

Tang asked the rider of the e-bike to show his identity card and informed him that he was to be fined 30 yuan (US$5) for illegally carrying an adult passenger. One of the men then became belligerent and attempted to flee.

The two men, plus another man who was summoned to the scene by the pair, started to jostle and beat the officer before trying to grab his identity card, police alleged.

Tang’s backup soon arrived and subdued two of the three, with another who fled the scene later turning himself in to police.

Tang suffered slight injuries to his head and chest, police said.

The three suspects could face the criminal charge of “impeding public administration," which carries a penalty of up to three years in prison.
