More self-service immigration channels put into use

Shanghai now has 156 self-service immigration clearance channels, making it easier for Chinese residents and foreigners with long-term visas to enter the country.

Pudong International Airport opened 17 extra self-service immigration clearance channels at Terminal 1 on Wednesday.

Shanghai now has 156 self-service immigration clearance channels — 105 at Pudong airport, 25 at Hongqiao airport and 26 at cruise ports — according to the Shanghai General Station of Immigration Inspection.

The service, available to Chinese people and expats with permanent residence or permits valid for six months or longer, requires on average 10 seconds to clear immigration.

It is estimated that in the first four months of this year, nearly 2.8 million passengers will have used the service, with more than 90 percent estimated to be Chinese mainland residents.

As the three-day Labor Day holiday draws near, it is estimated that about 110,000 people will enter or leave the country from Shanghai in a single day, officials said.
