A sports and health research base will be built on Chongming Island this year.

The base, taking up 100,000 square meters and located in Chongming’s Fusheng Economic Zone, will include a research and test center of sport and health equipment, a data collection and analysis center, as well as nutrition study centers.

It will be funded by Shanghai Phicomm Data Communication Technology Company, the sponsor of a series of sports events including the Shanghai International Elite 10K Race, Lijiang International Marathon, and Shanghai Citizen’s Dragon Boat Race.

According to Chongming District officials, the base also marks a shift for the Fusheng Economic Zone, which has been developing logistics and commercial service industries since its establishment in 1994.

“Chongming has been making use of its ecological environment and its developing sports industry by organizing sports events including cycling, running and water sport competitions,” said Hu Minghua, vice director of Chongming District. “The base will contribute to Chongming’s efforts in making itself into a world-class ecological island which encourages a healthy life style.”
