First aid training offered to young, white collar workers
The Shanghai Health Inspection Agency offered basic first aid training and emergency legal education to young white-collar workers at the Shanghai Shibei Hi-tech Park on Friday.
Officials provided the legal knowledge and emergency skills needed to identify and support young people who are at risk, displaying warning signs of heart issues, or experiencing cardiac arrest.
Tang Yan, an official from the agency, said the main emphasis of the agency’s health education this year has shifted from the elderly and retirees to young, white-collar workers.
In 2017, the number of sudden cardiac arrest deaths in China exceeded 550,000 according to the National Center for Cardiovascular Disease. “The risk rate for young people suffering sudden cardiac death continues to rise,” Tang said.
“I realized (this knowledge) was really useful when I saw a young girl had fainted on the subway one day but I couldn't do anything," Zeng Cong, a young IT worker at the park said.
“Today I learned how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) — I hope the first aid training I received today can give me confidence and the ability to help others.”
China has lately witnessed an increase of so-called empty-nest youth, or young people who live alone in big cities like Shanghai. Excessive pressure, overwork and unhealthy lifestyles pose a major health problem.
