Garbage collection carts in some downtown areas have been upgraded to ensure different types of waste are better sorted for recycling, Shanghai's greenery authorities said.

These traditional vehicles now have separate areas for recyclable garbage, including beverage bottles and cans and dry garbage, according to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

The renovated vehicles are being trailed from this month in areas including the south square of Shanghai Railway Station, Nanjing Road W., Xujiahui, Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall, People's Square, the Bund and Yuyuan Garden.

The latest practice aims to solve residents' complaints that while they actively participate in garbage sorting, their efforts seemed wasted since transport companies sometimes mix sorted garbage upon collection, officials said.
