2 arrested for abducting baby
A woman accused of abducting a 10-month-old girl to convince her boyfriend that it was their baby has been arrested, prosecutors of Qingpu District said on Friday.
Investigation found the woman, surnamed Deng, 46, and the man, surnamed Yang, 40, started their relationship in 2015 and she got pregnant one year later. She left Shanghai and returned to her hometown in Hunan Province.
She terminated her six-month pregnancy there but she didn’t tell Yang the truth. Instead, she told him that she delivered a healthy girl and she was raised by her relatives in Hunan, prosecutors said.
But Yang had been demanding to see their child as he believed she existed though he had never met her. So, she hatched plot to abduct a baby girl and began stalking people carrying baby girls in a roadside park in Liantang Town, prosecutors said.
Chance came at 2:45pm on May 1. An elder man was playing with his little granddaughter in the park. After he saw Deng, whom he had seen before, he left the girl briefly in the care of Deng and he left the park to deal with personal business. When he returned 10 minutes later, he just couldn’t find his granddaughter and Deng, prosecutors said.
At 10:45pm the same day, police found the baby in a rented apartment, together with Deng and Yang. The two were caught at the scene. The girl was found safe and sound, and has been reunited with her family.
Besides Deng, Yang has also been arrested as a further investigation to find out whether he was involved in the abduction is still ongoing, prosecutors said.
