Three people died and six others injured in an incident which took place in Pudong on Wednesday evening, police said on Thursday.

One of those dead was the alleged attacker, a 44-year-old man suranmed Huang.

Pudong police received a report at about 8:10pm on Wednesday that a man was attacking people with a knife in a residential complex on Gonghua Road, Caolu Town.

A 60-year-old woman was confirmed dead and six injured were rushed to hospital when police arrived on the scene, police said.

One of the injured, a 64-year-old man, later died in hospital.

When police were searching for Huang, he suddenly appeared from a residential building and started to wield a knife at police and residents.

Huang was subdued by police and residents, with one police officer injured in the process.

Huang was also injured, but police would not comment when asked how.

Huang was taken to hospital and later died of his injuries.

None of the survivors were critically injured, police confirmed. Their investigation is still underway.

Huang, unemployed, was said to be a loner with a bad temper who often quarrelled with neighbors over trivial matters, according to the police.

His father allegedly said that he had been cursing neighbors for blocking staircases with their belongings and parking bikes there for some time before the incident.
