WeChat payment now available on selected bus routes
Starting from Friday, passengers can use WeChat to pay for bus fares on 137 different routes around the city.
Before using the payment method via the mini program feature on WeChat, passengers must upload their IDs and phone numbers, then a QR code will be generated.
Passengers won’t have to pre-charge their accounts before paying their fares, and other public transport discounts will also apply to WeChat payment.
Two-thousand buses have already been equipped with a QR code scanner, and a total of 5,800 will support WeChat pay by the end of this month.
By the end of October, just in time for the China International Import Expo, all buses in the city will feature WeChat payment.
According to the city’s traffic authority, the payment method will later be introduced in railways, taxis, ferries and metros, which will break the bottleneck of incompatibility among the QR codes of different public transportation methods.
