Shanghai will sizzle as temperatures reach 35 degrees Celsius this week, according to the local weather authority.

Scattered thunderstorms are forecast for this afternoon and the high temperature will hover around 31 degrees, according to the Shanghai Metrological Bureau.

From Wednesday, a subtropical warm front and plum-rain system will move northwards, bringing clouds and occasional showers. The mercury will continue to climb, with the high hitting or exceeding 35 degrees, forecasters said.

Shanghai’s plum rain season typically concludes on July 10. The season’s end usually coincides with the hottest days of summer as well as the start of typhoon season.

Typhoon Prapiroon was located about 660 kilometers offshore from Shanghai as of 11am yesterday. The storm is not expected to affect the city, but residents of outlying coastal areas are warned to brace for strong winds.
