Eight Shanghai travelers have been rescued while seven others remain missing after two boats carrying 127 Chinese tourists capsized in rough sea waters in southern Thailand on Thursday, local authorities said on Saturday.

Authorities in Shanghai have been ordered by Shanghai Party Secretary Li Qiang and Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong to assist in the aftermath of the accident to strengthen the monitoring and reminding of risks involved in summer vacation travel and to scrutinize safety hazards.

Authorities in the city are closely following the development of the accident and are actively cooperating in the rescue work of Shanghai travelers. They are also conducting safety checks on the city's operation, traffic, fire control, tourism and flooding control to eliminate safety hazards, according to the office.
