Overhead cables along the Bund now a thing of the past
Overhead cables at the junction of Nanjing East and Zhongshan East roads that connect with the pantograph of bus route 20 were removed at 3:30am on Monday.
All overhead cables along the Bund from Waibaidu Bridge to Yan’an Road E have now been removed.
These cables have been serving bus route 20 since 1963 when the tram tracks were demolished.
According to the city’s bus company, Jiushi Cooperation, bus route 20 is now using double powered vehicles. The bus still uses its pantograph to attach to overhead cables along the route starting from Zhongshan Park in Changning District, but then it will use its own battery while on streets where overhead cables have been removed.
The overhead cables providing power to the other two bus routes, 11 and 26, will also be removed in the future, the bus company said.
