Students join a game at the Sunshine Foreign Language School Affiliated to Shanghai International Studies University to mark the opening of local campuses to the public.

ALL public elementary and middle schools in Putuo District have opened their campuses to citizens in an effort to further promote sports among the community.

District officials, and nearly 1,000 Putuo elementary and middle school students, took part in a ceremony at the Sunshine Foreign Language School Affiliated to Shanghai International Studies University on July 12 to mark the opening campaign of the campuses.

Putuo began opening part of the school campuses to nearby residents in July 2008.

The district created an innovative management method to invite third parties to manage the campuses during the public opening periods.

The opening campaign has been expanded to cover all public elementary and middle schools in Putuo.

These campuses are being opened, in specific hours, especially during the weekends as well as the summer and winter vocations.

A number of activities will be organized for the opening of the campuses such as juvenile sports training, community activities and skills training, according to the district’s sports bureau.

The bureau has organized an international chess tournament, a bridge game competition as well as a sports carnival at the campuses for students to take part in during the vocations.

“Putuo residents are encouraged to take more active part in the sports activities as well as protect the environment of the campuses,” Gu Weiling, director of the bureau, said at the ceremony.
