Hit-and-run driver detained by police after pedestrian dies
A man was detained last month for allegedly killing a pedestrian while driving after drinking at midnight, Shanghai police said on Tuesday.
The suspect, surnamed Ge, fled the scene after the accident, but was caught by police only a few hours later after he sent a friend to check out the scene, police said.
Police in Songjiang District received a report at about 1:30am on July 13 about the accident that took place at the crossroads of Yequan Road and Cheting Highway.
The pedestrian had already passed away when police arrived on the scene.
About 3am, when police were about to leave the scene after finishing their forensic investigation, a man approached them asking whether the hit pedestrian had been killed. But when police asked if he personally knew the victim, he claimed that he was just a passer-by.
Finding the man suspicious, police stopped him for further questioning, when he confessed that he had been sent by Ge, the vehicle's driver, to the scene.
Ge was then caught on a street not far from the scene, police said.
He had a blood-alcohol level of 31mg/100ml, which means that he was over the legal limit.
Ge allegedly confessed and said he fled the scene after seeing that there were no witnesses around.
He will be banned from driving for life and could face the criminal charge of dangerous driving, according to police.
