About 220 young chess players from 11 regions and countries in East Asia are competing in the Third Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship which runs to August 10 in Shanghai.

The players, aged from 8 to 18, are taking part in games at the Shanghai Yangjing-Juyuan Experimental School in the Pudong New Area.

This is the first time Shanghai holds the championship.

The event is organized by the Asian Chess Federation, Chinese Chess Association, Shanghai Sports Bureau and the Board and Card Games Administrative Center of the General Administration of Sports of China.

Shanghai’s chess team is the only team to have won China’s national championships for five consecutive seasons. Local player Ju Wenjun also recently won the world championship.

Lujiazui, in Pudong, has been promoting chess for several years.

Schools in Lujiazui such as Yangjing-Juyuan Experimental School and Laoshan Primary School started chess classes more than a decade ago. And the area has held matches between Chinese and foreigner players for seven consecutive years.

“We found that chess is a good recreation for people of all kinds. Also, chess can act as a bridge that connects white-collar workers and local residents,” said Deng Liang, director of the Lujiazui Sub-district Office.
