Man dies after collapse in Metro

A man found unconscious in the Xujiahui Metro Station was pronounced dead at Shanghai No. 6 Hospital around 3pm yesterday, after being taken to the hospital by ambulance at 9:44am.

Mao Jianping, the Xujiahui station chief, said he found the man collapsed on the ground in the station hall near exit 9 at 9:25am.

An ambulance was called immediately and a call for help was broadcast throughout the station. Pan Lingling, a nurse from Huashan Hospital who just finished her night shift, was waiting for a train when she heard the call and ran to perform CPR on the fallen man.

“The man’s lips were purple and he was not breathing,” said Pan. She and another man performed CPR for 10 minutes until an ambulance arrived at 9:35am.

According to Pan, the man’s heartbeat recovered to 60 beats per minute after doctors performed defibrillation on him.

“He was soon taken to the hospital,” said Pan. “I thought we made it.”

The hospital said the man suffered cardiac arrest. Police are looking for the man’s family, according to Shanghai Shentong Metro Group.
