Typhoon Yagi is estimated to brush past or make landfall near coastal areas around north Zhejiang or south Jiangsu provinces at the weekend, probably on Sunday night or Monday morning, weather authorities say.

Yagi is likely to bring some rainfall and wind to the city, the flood control authority announced.

It has requested that sluice gates inland stop allowing water from open waters and asked workers there to prepare to lower the water level. Pump trucks and machines are standing by for possible downpours.

Boats out on the sea are urged to return to safety, while operations and construction at or near the sea are asked to retreat.

By 2pm on Friday, Yagi was 1,250 kilometres southeast of Zhoushan city in Zhejiang. Winds have so far reached force 8.
