Woman commits suicide at Pudong International Airport: police
A woman has died after jumping from one of the terminal buildings at Pudong International Airport, Shanghai police said on Sunday.
The incident happened on the early morning of August 9.
The woman, surnamed Wu, arrived at the airport the previous day on flight MU588 from New York.
She carried a bag with a wallet, a mobile phone and a passport, but didn't have any checked-in luggage, police said.
After arrival she took a hotel bus, but during the ride she tried to open the door. Her actions and demeanor were described as "abnormal."
She asked to return to the airport after arriving at the hotel and was transported back by hotel staff. She later jumped from the departure level of Terminal 1 after climbing over the railing, police said.
Wu left China for the US 19 years ago and this was the first time she has returned since then, police said.
There was a rumor on the Internet that Wu committed suicide after being fined by customs for bringing undeclared products, but airport police said that customs didn't have any issues with her.
