A 26-year-old man has been detained for allegedly stealing expensive sneakers worth about 7,000 yuan (US$1,020) from downtown stores, Shanghai police said on Monday.

The thefts took place on July 18 and 20 at two stores on Nanjing Road W. and Huaihai Road M. in Huangpu District.

The second store found out about the loss of a pair of sneakers worth 1,599 yuan the same day and reported it to police.

Surveillance cameras at the store showed that the man asked for a pair of new shoes from a store attendant on the first floor, went up to the fifth floor, entered a fitting room and left with a swollen bag.
