A man who earned 18,000 yuan (US$2,616) by running gambling services through WeChat has been arrested, according to Jinshan District prosecutors.

The man, surnamed Dong, is a gambling addict in huge debt, according to prosecutors. He created a WeChat group in May and invited others to join in, before posting a link leading to an online gambling platform.

Each game took half an hour. Losers transferred money to Dong and then he transferred funds on to the winners, but each time he kept 10 percent as a kickback, prosecutors said.

Police received information and caught Dong mid-June. Within a month, he had organized more than 400 gambling games and earned 18,000 yuan, prosecutors said.
