Man detained for fraud against hopeful parent
The suspect is now under detention in Putuo District.
A man has been detained for allegedly defrauding another man of 300,000 yuan (US$44,000), Shanghai police said on Monday.
The victim, a parent surnamed Wu, paid the suspect, surnamed Zhang, the money from June 2017 to have his daughter admitted into a famous private elementary school in Minhang District. He filed a report with police in Putuo District in July this year after Zhang told him his daughter couldn't be admitted, police said.
Wu sought help from Zhang after he assured him that he was an acquaintance of the director of the education bureau of Minhang District.
Zhang has allegedly admitted that he doesn't know the director of the bureau.
He was caught on August 20 and said he spent the money on gambling.
