More than 2,000 Shanghai buses have been equipped with a new device that will monitor and analyze drivers’ conditions to safeguard passengers, Shanghai Ba-Shi Public Transportation Group said.

The device consists of a camera installed on the instrument panel in front of the driver’s seat that uses a facial recognition system. If a driver dozes off or makes a phone call while driving, the system will report the situation to the bus company headquarters immediately.

Repeat offenders will be suspended, Zhou Ming from the bus company said.

Meanwhile, some other small cameras have also been installed around buses to provide drivers with a 360-degree, seamless view in order to help prevent accidents due to blind spots.
