Heart-op baby enters the world
A baby who had heart surgery on July 17 while still in the womb was delivered yesterday at Xinhua Hospital. He weighed 3.98 kilograms.
After an ultrasound examination, Dr Sun Kun, who led the heart surgery team, said his condition was better than expected and no further surgery was needed.
The baby had been diagnosed with a rare life-threatening heart condition and without early intervention would have died.
“After the procedure in the womb, the infant’s aortic valves, which were almost closed, have opened up to almost twice what they were seven weeks ago,” said Sun.
