Temple gives lecture on traditional cultures

The city's Jade Buddha Temple began giving serial lectures on China's traditional cultures over the weekend.

Poon Chung-kwong, professor emeritus of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, gives a lecture on how to overcome the adversity with wisdom from the Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism at Jade Buddha Temple on Sunday.

The city's Jade Buddha Temple began giving serial lectures on China's traditional cultures over the weekend.

Visitors are encouraged to attend the lectures free of charge while visiting the historical temple which has just finished a major renovation, according to the Juequn research center, an academic institution of the temple.

Poon Chung-kwong, professor emeritus of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, gave a lecture on how to overcome the adversity with wisdom from the Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism on Sunday.

Poon said adversities are common in different stages of life. Confucianism regards adversity as a chance for self-improvement, while Taoism believes adversity comes along with good fortune. Buddhism encourages one to realize the meaning of life by facing up to the problems.

Over 100 audiences attended the lecture held in the Juequn building of the temple in downtown Putuo District. The temple will invite experts and scholars from all walks of life for the regular lectures, according to the center.
