Shanghai Trade Union announced a new biennial prize for innovative manufacturing workers in the city on Monday.

The top prize winner will be awarded 200,000 yuan (US$30,000), making it the most valuable prize in its category ever in the city.

The union said the purpose is to encourage manufacturing workers to keep learning and innovating.

The prize awards those who devise new technologies, materials, products and manufacturing methods, as well as those who improve machinery or apply key innovative technologies from abroad.

Interested applicants can sign up via their companies to district trade unions or industry associations, or apply directly at the Shanghai Trade Union in person.

The first selections will soon be announced.

Apart from the top prize, other winners will be awarded 100,000 yuan, 50,000 yuan and 30,000 yuan prizes.

Those who have won National and Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Awards with the same innovation results are not eligible to enter, according to the trade union.
