Old expansion joints (left) on the city’s major elevated roads are being replaced by new ones.

By the end of this year, 124 joints on the Inner Ring Road from Nanpu Bridge to Yangpu Bridge, and Yan’an Elevated Road from Huqingping Viaduct to Yan’an Road E. Tunnel, will have been replaced.

Work will be carried out between 12am and 5am to reduce traffic disturbance to motorists. The work will later expand to all 207 kilometers of elevated roads in the city.

The old expansion joints will be replaced with new-generation ones that will provide a smoother surface so as to more effectively protect the bridges and reduce noise, the bureau said.
