The International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital of China Welfare Institute laid foundation for the construction of its branch in Fengxian District on Friday.

The construction work is expected to be finished in 2020 and the Fengxian branch, covering an area of 100 mu (6.7 hectares), will be put into use in 2021 with 500 beds, serving women and children not only in Fengxian, but also the whole Yangtze River Delta with high quality health services in gynaecology, obstetrics, reproductive medicine and paediatrics.

The new medical facility will also devote to medical research and innovation to improve service and support the city’s ambition in building up a global center of science and technology innovation.

The International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital in Xuhui District was founded in 1952 by Soong Ching Ling, Honorary President of the People's Republic of China, and has become one of the most popular hospitals in the city. Each year, it receives more than 1.26 outpatient visits and over 40,000 inpatients with more than 17,000 deliveries of babies.

“The Fengxian branch will help solve the insufficiency of resources in gynaecology and obstetrics in southern suburbs and relieve stress on the headquarters in Xuhui, where patients now have to wait for long time and squeeze in crowded wards,” said Huang Hefeng, director of the hospital. “Our hospital will also be the largest of its kind in Shanghai by 2021.”
