Film base looks beneath the surface
A photographer films underwater scenes in real water so as to produce a better visual effect at Tuko Underwater Film Base.
TV and movie directors are increasingly filming underwater scenes in real water so as to produce a better visual effect. An underwater photo studio can be found not far away from Zuibai Pond Park in Songjiang District.
Tuko Underwater Film Base was reconstructed from an old factory building by being reinforced with structural steel. From the outside, the base is a two-story building of ordinary industrial style. A parking lot in front of the building provides enough space for film crews’ trucks.
Inside the building there is an all-steel structure underwater shooting studio. The shooting pond, with a depth of 5 meters and a volume of 486 tons of water, employs systems such as 24-hour water circulation, heating and ultraviolet disinfection facilities.
The water temperature can be adjusted according to the needs of a film crew. A huge crane lifts props into the water. A lifting platform adjusts height and angle for the shooting. And photographers film the action pictures through a four-sides transparent viewing window.
“Our film base covers a floor area of about 3,800 square meters. The shooting pond has a length of 12 meters and a width of 8 meters. Many film crews and advertising companies came here to film pictures because motion pictures shot at our base can have a deep-sea visual effect,” said Liang Shuai, operation assistant of Tuko Culture and Media Co.
Since its opening to the public in 2016, the film base has supported shooting of films and TV such as “Old Boy” and “The Starry Night, The Starry Sea.”
Tuko Underwater Film Base is within half an hour’s drive from Chedun, Shengqiang and Yancang film bases, which offers much more convenience when crews need to shoot on different movie or TV sets.
