A burglary suspect who allegedly stole over 10,000 yuan (US$1,460) worth of objects from three village houses has been detained, Shanghai police said on Monday.

The burglaries took place in Cailu and Heqing towns in the Pudong New Area on August 24. In all three cases, the locks to the houses were breached.

Due to the inadequacy of street surveillance cameras in the villages, police were not able to identify the suspect till one of the burglary victims mentioned that a banana on his dinner table was also missing.

From this clue, police officers in charge of the investigation remembered seeing a man riding an e-bike and eating a banana in footage from one of the surveillance cameras, and the man was soon tracked down.
